How does ARKit work for iOS devices?

ARKit is Apple’s framework for building augmented reality (AR) experiences on iOS devices. It combines data from the device’s cameras, motion sensors, and onboard processors to blend digital content with the real world in real time. At its core, ARKit uses a technology called Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO), which fuses camera input with motion data from the accelerometer and gyroscope to track the device’s position and orientation in 3D space. Performance optimization is a key aspect of ARKit. It leverages the device’s GPU and CPU efficiently, balancing real-time processing with battery life. Newer iOS devices with LiDAR scanners (like iPhone Pro models) enhance ARKit’s depth-sensing accuracy, enabling faster surface detection and improved occlusion—where virtual objects appear behind real-world obstacles. ARKit also supports features like people occlusion, which uses the front-facing camera to allow AR content to interact realistically with humans in the scene. Developers can access these features through APIs, ensuring apps work across supported devices while taking advantage of hardware advancements. For example, a measurement app might use LiDAR to instantly map a room’s dimensions, while an older device without LiDAR would rely on slower camera-based tracking.
